Choosing an Islamic name

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "On the Day of Resurrection you will be called by your names and the names of your fathers, so give yourselves good names." (Sunan Abu Dawud)

A good Islamic name should ideally carry a positive meaning, honour a prophet or a companion, or express a beautiful attribute of Allah. Names beginning with "Abd" (servant of) followed by one of Allah's names — like Abdullah, Abdur Rahman — are among the most beloved names in Islam.

Names to avoid

Scholars advise avoiding names that carry negative meanings, names of known enemies of Islam, or names that imply self-praise or divinity. Names like "King of Kings" or names attributing divine qualities to a human being are generally discouraged.
